i was checking the online TV guide, because it’s something I do everyday for no apparent reason. I suppose I secretly hope that some remarkable movie will be on one of my 3 stations. Well, the CMT music awards are tonight, which I’m pumped about. I think I like all of the performers. Anyway, I was a bit shocked to see this in the TV guide details popup about the broadcast:

Rating: TV-PG (Parental Guidance Suggested - This program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for younger children.) Many parents may want to watch it with their younger children. The theme itself may call for parental guidance and/or the program contains one or more of the following: moderate violence (V), some sexual situations (S), infrequent coarse language (L), or some suggestive dialogue (D).

Now I’m almost positive that many in this country still associate country music with good, wholesome values, the antithesis of rock music “those kids listen to.” YET, you’ve read how this awards ceremony, honoring all our country music heroes was rated. Pretty damn interesting. My guess is the reason is 1 of 2 things:

  1. The world needs to realize that just because country music involves cowboys, love stories, and slide guitar, it doesn’t make it more wholesome. In fact, I’ve been hearing almost as many sexual innuendos and definitely seen just as much, if not more, skin in country music songs & videos than with rock. I’ll avoid a rant about the song, “I left something turned on at home” from my big yellow cheesewagon days.
  2. This rating system is a P.O.S. and its efforts to protect our children’s “innocence” is a bunch of crap. Maybe these people who are going into convulsions about the content on today’s TV should just discuss it with their children and find alternate activities for them. That way they will certainly grow up in to naive adults who will be constantly hurt and taken advantage of. Go mom! Thanks for the real-world preparation.

Well, that’s enough soapbox talk for one day. Every time I hear that word, I think of one of my college professors. Weird.
