Turkey in a Nutshell

Got up at 6am, baked 2 awesome pies, thoroughly cleaned my entire house, got a call from mom that she thought Snippy was dying, cleaned the house a lot more since that news meant I’d have to stay home overnight, and finally took off for home at noon…10 minutes after I should have already been home. oops.
Went campus hopping to find mom a Journal & Courier with “important coupons.” My pecan pie sprung a leak on this journey and it seemed runnier than it should have been. Well, 40 miles later, so close to being home, I forget to hold on to it while I rounded a 90-degree corner and splat, it sprung up on my car door. I was already in ill spirits after hearing one of my relatives/freelance clients was gonna be at Thanksgiving…in no mood to talk work and my perfect pie getting wiped out was a nice touch to all this.
I walked in to find this client lady + 2 complete strangers along with my family in the dining room. Turns out they were her brother & his g/f. Well, I obviously walked in the room with a look to kill but tried to cheer myself up with some witty remarks like Ii hope everyone prefers their pecan pie tossed.”
Well my mom put the pie in the oven to try to put it back together but she didn’t set a timer (I always tell her this is important)...so maybe a half hour later, she walks by and notices the oven still on. I cringe as she opens the oven, revealing my now black pecan pie. At that point, I didn’t really care, though, and people ate it anyway and said it was good.
It turned out to be a decent day. Talked to my aunt mostly. We’re a lot alike. Love black & being alone. She was a lil tipsy from the $70 wine my uncle had brought. My brother tried a sip of it and nearly got sick. The best part was he poured tea in to his glass quickly to try to drown the taste in his mouth, apparently not realizing there was still a significant amount of wine left in his glass, so the second face was even funnier.
But yeah, turned out alright. Some good quotes/stories:
In support of my anti-early bird day after thanksgiving shopping: “Well, seriously, people have been trampled doing that. I mean, really, how would you like to be up in heaven…or wherever you go…and have someone ask you how you die, only to reply “i got trampled to death trying to buy my son a power ranger…”. That’s just not cool…“Son, mommy’s not home for Christmas because you had to have a red power ranger, so you better fricken appreciate it.”
Me: I just avoid wine across the board
Aunt: That’s good, maybe you’ll avoid getting that trait [alcoholism]
Me: Yeah, I’ve been trying
Aunt: Wait…to get it or keep from??
Me: To get it…curse my genes for not having that trait! I should be able to be an alcoholic like everyone else.
Aunt: Well, there’s always Jenna to carry on the family tradition.
Me: Yeah, whenever she’s stressed with school, I just tell her I left her a lil somethin’ somethin’ in the fridge to cure her ills“Oh, he’s dumber than flint”...moments pass…Jenna starts giggling…dad rephrases “err…dumber than smoke”...then I realize the humor and start laughing…our youngest cousin’s name is Flint…luckily, that part of the family was in the next room
Aunt: “Who all got hugs??” *ppl raise hands* “Fuck you all. I stood up, positioned myself to be hugged and I still got passed by. Am I that unhuggable?”
And day after Thanksgiving…finally got Snippy a vet appointment for 2pm aka ruining any chances of me accomplishing work that day. Oh yeah, that and I got to bed early but my sister came in and woke me up at 11:30pm, asking if i would sleep in her room because she was scared from watching House of Wax. jeez! And I noticed Snippy didn’t move at all when Jenna walked in my room so, still half asleep, I say “oh god, I think Snippy’s dead.” 4 increasingly loud “Snippy!” calls and Snip finally lifts her head. I swear she does that on purpose. So yeah, Snip & I go to Jenna’s room and get to get up at 5am with Jenna’s alarm and transfer back to my room and get up 2 hours later to be up for the vet’s call. ugh.
So snippy was acting much better since the time I’d arrived home. She could hardly walk but she was still following me wherever I went so I finally just sat down most the day to save her struggling and held her. She looked so horrible. I was pretty certain these were her final days, so she was getting all of my attention. Well, I get her in to the vet and she was seeming much more active, but the assistants still thought she looked so fragile. Well, it turns out that she’s in heat. The shelter lied to me about her being fixed. She’d had her tail tightly tucked under her so no one had noticed any bleeding. Well, with her heart murmur, surgery with anesthetic is really risky but the vet thinks I should have the surgery anyway. This is a really shitty decision to make. I’ve decided to follow the vet’s advice and get her the surgery in a couple weeks. They said they’d monitor her heart the whole time, but there’s a chance she may not come out of it. Ugh, but having the surgery is the best thing for her in the long run…if she lives through it. The little thing just needs to make it through so she can come back and live with me when I move. I’m gonna get us an apartment super close to work so I can visit her everyday for lunch.
But that turned in to a big nutshell, so I’m gonna get back to working. The roomie gets back today…her week absence did not seem long enough.
oh and something I forgot last post…ppl from our company were models for the latest holiday issue of Fishers|Geist. Our secretary was on the cover. Pretty damn cool. They looked so pro.
Also, I got the new Bright Eyes live album, Motion Sickness, and all i have to say is “mmm” and the same goes for Radio Paradise playlist this fine morning on iTunes radio.
