Last night I had a dream that the Russian members of our company QA team (there are oddly several) opened a rock quarry. I shared the dream with a member of the QA team and he offered such an awesome analysis that I needed to share it. The quoted text is my dream recollection to him via IM.

Analysis

Your dream is about your choice to change career paths.  It’s quite obvious, really.  Follow me here….

“So I was driving out in the middle of nowhere looking for the rock quarry that [former head of QA] was running and, in my head, that all the Russians now worked at b/c I was trying to support their new industry…so I saw a bunch of old cars parked and pulled in I just wanted to find their rock shop but it was this huge cave that I had to follow through before we got to what I was looking for. I said I was looking for nice minerals, not just normal rocks or dinosaur stuff”

• Middle of Nowhere, looking for something—Classic metaphor for venturing into unfamiliar territory, maybe anticipation/anxiety of new career direction? You’re looking for life answers in this line of work.
• Rock quarry/looking for fancy minerals—you’ve been telling me recently about nature documentaries that fascinated you, particularly the videography—probably the epic scale of the rock quarry imagery is reflective.  You appreciate the distinction between rocks and fine minerals—meaning you see nature at a deeper level than most.
• The Russians, looking for something—-this is interesting.  You see the Russians on the team as a solidified unit with an identity.  This is what you and the video team are looking for in the quest to rebrand yourselves.

“…and then the dream transformed into more Indiana Jones/Mummy Returns b/c different kinds of insects kept showing up in hoards and destroying things/people. The last thing I remember was trying to avoid those and I never did buy my rocks.”

• This action sequence was stimulated by our recent conversation about finding a video team identity, during which I showed you the internal QA site [which prominently featured a beetle]. This is when we discussed beetles and mantes, and you offered the fact that beetles “destroy everything”, just as they did in the dream.
• The fact that the insects distracted you from your goal of getting the rocks indicates that in your current career, you are being distracted from your true goals by the constant barrage of insects (in your case, Mantis tickets [our web dev bug logging app]). In other words, your dream is positively reinforcing your career choice to move from crd/web dev/mantis ticket handler to something in which your true goals are more attainable.

Also, I found out I got a pay raise, which is bittersweet since it will just make my pay cut to change roles that much more apparent :) I had lunch with a co-worker who I’ve seen around for over a year (?) but had never spoken to! Learned a bunch of new stuff about another corner of the company.
