This is a long, boring post, mainly about me wanting to go postal on one of my bosses. It’s necessary venting, so sorry, deal with it. I should have a cool post for the weekend.

Well, the last 24 hours haven’t liked me very much. I tried going to bed early last night, but instead I was sitting there thinking. I rolled over and realized I’d been “thinking” for an hour already, so I got up and turned on the computer. I chatted with a friend for another 1.5 hours before I was finally exhausted. 6 hours later I got up to start my day. blah, so I attempted to return my dud fan to Dell, but DHL drove me insane, saying my phone number was not an authorized pickup location, so I go to my office and they were nice enough to call from there and it all worked out. Phew. Then I have to go to campus and sign new employment forms because they had to set me up as a real employee. Then it was time for my first work meeting since the profs had left for LA 2 weeks ago.

Well, the meeting was really crappy, and I think my day might be going a little better had it gone better. The client had mentioned they were considering one of my designs (change of contact…they decided they didn’t like the current design we’d done for them…thus redesign of the redesign phase began. yay.) Well, I actually liked the design they’re considering. It’s the first one I’ve done that I truly like, so I was proud of myself. Plus, my mom and my new friend both really liked it, which is a bonus because neither of them liked any of my past ones either. Anyway, one of the profs has nicknamed it the “partridge family” design. Amusing at first but continued to make it abundantly clear how much he hated it.

I have no problems with people disliking my designs. Hell, I do it all the time :) But this guy really hae no reason for hating it other than it’s “happy” and for some reason, it’s inappropriate for our audience. The client requested bright colors, so I gave them that in a pseudo retro design. I think I pissed him off today when I said, “No, ___, what they want is something bright & happy.” His reply, “Well, I have skulls in my office so I wouldn’t know anything about that.” WTF, my room is B&W but part of our business is umm pleasing the client. Yes? And you know, I was very cool with his dislikes until he said to the other prof, “So are we gonna let them use this design? I mean really. Didn’t we mention to him that we made some of these wild designs thinking they wouldn’t choose it.” Okay, so that hurt my feelings, because I designed this as something they’d want, not as something they wouldn’t. I think it’s stupid to offer people something you don’t want them to choose. You’re just hurting yourself when they DO pick it.

In a nutshell, I’m bummed, because on top of that, I’ve been playing primary contact with the client in the their absence and they didn’t appear to have even read my replies to the emails. Hell, when they were reading the client emails, I had to point out to the rude prof that they were referring to “his” portion of the project. I don’t care that they were at Siggraph for the past week or so. Part of being in charge of something is being able to keep your head in the game and get back on task after you have to leave something for awhile. And for the record, the Siggraph conference isn’t even that cool. I pretty much hated it when I was there. And had I had a laptop & internet access (which they both did), I would have had no problems checking my email every evening, especially if I just had to read it and not reply. It’s funny that the busier of the 2 profs made time to check his email and even correspond with me by phone one day.

I’m just very annoyed right now, so I’m eating & typing. Because to top all this off, we’ve had no work to do on the project for the last 2 weeks, which means 0 on timecards which means 0 on my paycheck which means thank goodness for my freelance work so I don’t have 0 on my rent check. I’m just very frustrated that this project has been so disorganized and all over the place. I almost wish it could just start over and things could all be made clear from the beginning and the initial contact would never even know they were making a website. Blah! Did I mention I’m angry? Oh and this design basher, well, I don’t even respect his design work so grr. There are 2 people’s opinions that count for anything as far as design on our project, and they are my fellow student workers. Thank god they are sane and with the program and funny :)
