I saw 2 great (okay, 3) movies over the weekend: Three Kings, Amelie, and Star Trek: First Contact. Three Kings wasn’t the average war movie I thought it might be. It ended up a pleasant blend of humor and drama. An interesting perspective on the worth of each person’s life.
My friend kinda freaked when I said I preferred Star Wars over Star Trek, so I was forced to watch a Star Trek movie, since I was basing my judgment solely off the TV series. The movie was surprisingly interesting. I still think it was a bit corny at times, but I suppose most sci-fi films are in their own respect. I have the same feeling about Star Wars, just not to the same degree. As a side note, android sex was a little too much for my brain to comprehend.

The highlight of the weekend had to be Amelie. I’d been debating renting it quite often. I found the cover alone quite intriguing. However, I was never renting in the company of people would appreciate a so-called strange film, let alone a foreign film. Well, my friend happened to own it, so we watched it. It was so wonderful! Some of the shots made my heart melt…such a beautiful film. Rich, vivid colors…I felt like I was in a Vermeer painting.
The characters were so interesting and odd…unlike any I’ve ever seen. I became so involved in the story. I could relate to so much of the movie and understand Amelie’s bizarre acts. The character introductions gave the film a more indie feel. They were humorous mostly, but they also put the audience in Amelie’s head. As if each of us, like her, were analyzing the smallest and strangest aspects of each character trying to understand them.
Oh, and it’s a French film so it was all subbed. It’s funny, though, because I remember the movie as them talking not me reading what they said. I don’t mind subtitles at all…if they are done correctly, of course. And French is such a gorgeous language to listen to, so that just added another level of beauty to the film.
I hope to watch Amelie again soon. I loved it so much.
