Debricking a Linksys & becoming a pro bowler

Thursday night was full of technodrama. My new lovely G5 was having spotty wireless reception on my network for no apparent reason. After 2 nights of googling, I found someone experiencing the same deal and their solution was flashing the router with this linux outfit. Obviously, it would void my warranty, but I refused to walk across my apartment one more time to reset my router (every 20 minutes), so I gave it a whirl.
“Upgrade are failed!” was the alert that greeted me halfway through my attempt. The bad grammar just added insult to injury. And so my router was dead…the power light just flickered, having no idea what to do with itself. Apparently, “bricking” is the term for killing your router. At first, I accepted my $40 loss, but then in a moment of genius, I realized that if someone had taken time to give a name to killing a router, someone else had taken time to figure out how to unbrick it. In 10 minutes, I found my salvation. How I bricked my router…and brought it back. And so I proceeded to void my warranty on a whole new level.
It’s hard to recall a time when I was more excited than that moment at 12:30am when I was holding a tiny screwdriver between the 15 & 16 pins on my flash card on my exposed router circuit board and the ping being sent from my laptop suddenly started receiving a reply as I plugged the power to the card. “I love you internet. I love you geeky man for sharing your lame saturday night!”
And then I got cocky. So I tried to flash the router with linux again and again, I killed it :) But no fear, my handy dandy tftp program and new found understanding of my inner router had it back in black without even opening the case. And miraculously, my internet on my mac is now working beautifully. Apparently, my router needed a little harder reset than just holding that little button for 20 seconds and power cycling :)

And so Thursday night’s victory brought a positive outlook to my Friday. I’m a trial part-time member of the interactive team for 2 weeks, and so far, I’m loving it. I leave each day with physical evidence of a hard day’s work. And as a perk, the rest of the team dropped downstairs to invite me to lunch. Oh, to feel loved haha.
After work, I had plans to drive up to Lafayette. I decided to check if any bars would gonna have some bands before I left, and much to my surprise, I had a myspace message waiting for me from Clayton Miller Band. I’m pretty sure it was their mom. Anyway, had myspace not failed to send me a notification that morning, photos I took of them a couple weeks ago would have been printed for an autograph session yesterday down in FL. Damn! But she also asked if she could get a CD of the photos, which worked out well because I’d planned to visit Java Roaster that night anyway. So I burned a CD of every photo I’d ever taken of them and dropped it off at Java Roaster with the hot boy. Sure, I may not get credited as photographer, but the mere fact that CMB fans could have signed photos I took hanging on their wall all over the country is pretty damn cool on its own. I see it as a creative exchange. I enjoy a band’s stellar show and give them some potentially cool evidence of it. Karma.

But my main reason for venturing up north was to purchase a bowling ball with my $100 rent.com gift card. He has to order in the ball & shoes I want, so I’ll have to drive back next week to pick them up. hehe I might splurge and get a dope bag too. Next order of business is getting some shirts designed & printed. I’m stoked about being on a league. I’ll feel obligated to go practice at least once a week now until Oct. 10 start date. I’ll need to figure out the quirks of my new ball.
At any rate, I’m stoked. Yes, twice in one post. If I keep up this rate on knocking things off my “to do before i die” list, I’ll be able to die with complete peace of mind by age 40. And while I was enjoying my bagel & chai at Java Roaster, I think I figured out the title for a book that I might write some day: “Growing up around nothing, Living with no one, and How it helped me do everything”. I’m thinking it will be a series of little stories, sort of like a “chicken soup for the *blank*” series deal.
I know this is lengthy, but I haven’t posted in ages and I’m just really happy with my life right now. I’ve gotten myself unhooked off some things that were pulling me down.
And I’m loving trying to figure out how to rock this mac. My goal is to make some cool track in GarageBand, likely 100% composed of loops haha. I do need a musically inclined friend to make my life easier.
Oh, oh and I nearly forgot. I got my Mason Proper CD and I love it! Every song has its own sound and nice lyrics and a great array of instruments. And I just really like what they sing about—none of that “i love this girl” or “i hate my life” sappy bullshit. It’s actually kind of inspiring. Maybe the fact I’ve listened to it for a week straight has added to my good spirits. And yeah, I think party shuffle works better on a mac :)
