Carmel HS/Bathroom Ninjas Reunion

Last night I flew solo to Local’s Only for the Bathroom Ninjas reunion show. I really had no idea what I was getting in to, but I hadn’t seen Dave E. forever, so I figured I’d give it a try. Well, this was their band from HS (about 8 years ago), so the show was seriously a Carmel HS reunion. Luckily, I’m an honorary alum so I knew half of them. Had a nice talk with Dave. The kid is talented. Damn, everyone I know from Carmel is like that. I hate them and love them all at the same time. Also, ran in to Kijak, and he confirmed that I really do know everyone. Apparently, he’s moving to Chicago in the fall which is disappointing but exciting for him. He’s one of my fave local comedians.
Without a doubt, the high point of the night was looking across the room and seeing J. Moulder. Seriously, I’m trying to recall the last time I saw him. I think it may have been his show at MMS in ‘06, which makes it like a year & a half. That’s crazy. I know I’ve said it before, but he’s honestly one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Sadly, it seems IDSNID has officially disbanded, but he has some solo stuff he’s working on and some stuff with his roommate. I’m really anxious to hear it. Aside from not loving Andrew Bird, he has pretty solid music taste. He’s a contributor at My Old Kentucky Blog, so you can follow his reviews and such there.
So yeah, the actual shows were a bit of a hodge podge. CMNDR opened the night. They had more of a rock sound but still bits of punk I thought. I enjoyed their set. It was not nearly to the hardcore level of Bolth, the band that followed. I tried really, really hard, but for the life of me, I can not tell you a single lyric from their songs :) Definite energy, though. I have to say my favorite set of the evening was The Last Domino. He is a one man band, sampling guitar & alto sax. I think Summer Flame was the song I especially liked. Definitely worth checking out. The man behind Domino is John Orr, and he joined in the half set from Kid Overdrive, which consisted of Nintendo covers, highlighting pieces from Mega Man. It was pretty fricken awesome.
The night closed, of course, with the reunion of The Bathroom Ninjas. They still had a fair set of hardcore fans. It was pretty hilarious. Moulder & I were amused by the frontman’s antics. He was promoting the band’s favorite charity between each song: Farts that Change Lives. Don’t ask me to explain. The show ended when the sound guy turned off their mic’s. I believe Dave described that as proof of a good show. Equipment definitely got broken. I can only imagine that the reputation they established will call for another reunion in another 8 years.
I shall count the days.
