Broad Ripple Review

I met up with Rachel this evening at BW3’s in Broad Ripple. We’d planned to do some vintage shopping, but decided to save it for a day with more time (and money). Then we headed to a co-worker’s party, not too far off, but we scoped for non-scary liquor stores on the way there. The one we stopped at was definitely less scary than the one we passed later. I felt like such an alcoholic carrying out my captain in paper bag.
Anyway, we made it to the party, which turned out to be great fun, even if a few co-workers let me down and didn’t show. I think there were only 3 people there that weren’t in some design-related field. The host is a graffiti artist, so all his friends were there and we looked through photos of all his work. I got to hook Rachel up with our print guy, and she got the info hook up from two other print girls that were there. There was a hilarious moment in the kitchen where my mouth hurt from laughing so much, and I haven’t the foggiest memory of what it was actually about. Man, that’s annoying.
Well, we took off early to try to catch The Malcontents show. Of course, we walk in and see Dave (drummer, fellow cg grad) and he’s like, “We just finished.” Rachel & I were bummed, but we helped Dave pack his set and talked to him for quite awhile. He doesn’t scare me anymore hehe. They’re playing at battle of the bands at The Patio on Sept. 6, so we are insisting that large amounts of people go there to support them. He claims it’s a popularity contest. Anyway, it was cool catching up with him, and it worked out that I’d just seen his photos so i got to compliment him in person. Good times.
So print guy met up with us later at the Mel and gave us a tour of the place. His band played there a lot so he’s beyond a “regular.” He took us to the back and told stories about random things on the wall. It was quite amusing. It was my first punk/ska concert, and Rachel and I decided we must return. It was a really different crowd. Guys in studded leather with mohawks and such were dancing like hippies to reggae-type ska. It was just strange. I believe my co-worker’s band, Hate the Drake will be playing Aug. 28th at the Mel. Sort of a pseudo-comeback show they say.
