My sister visited yesterday, and we went out with Rachel to see the Clayton Miller Band. Of course, Rachel was sold on them immediately. I believe this was my 4th show. They played at the Java Roaster, which is apparently owned by their uncle. It’s an awesome place, so I definitely need to go back.

I’d never seen them play in such an intimate setting, and it made it by far the best show I’d seen. Cole & LD each did an amazing solo. Cole’s singing voice rocks my world. It’s so rough. LD insisted they “rotate” so Cole switched to bass and LD played drums. They can all play everything. I thought Cole was better on bass than his dad. Clayton is definitely the guitarist of the family though. The control he has is remarkable, and he manages to make the guitar sound completely different.

They played a half hour over show time, which was awesome. They started out with their heavy blues rock sound, but by half way, it was stripped down solos and true blues. I’d never seen Cole out from behind the drums so much. He came out front for “Keys to the Highway,” and man, so powerful. Hearing him, you’d never guess he was a skinny white boy.

Oh, interesting side fact, Rachel said one of her reporter friends said Lafayette ranks top 10 in the nation for the number arts facilities to town size or something like that. She told me that after I said, “If Lafayette has nothing else, it has fantastic live music.”
