After the rain

The sky is glowing pale yellow, while the neighborhood is silent save for the sound of water running down gutters and some sparse raindrops knocking on the windows. Good afternoon, November. The new month seems to have brought with it a new season. It’s my 170th day in San Francisco, but yesterday marked the first time I had actually seen it rain. I’ve become so accustomed to looking out the bathroom window at work, seeing the bay bridge set against a clear blue sky, that the rainy, foggy view yesterday felt a bit like a bad dream. Same goes for today, when even at noon, there was barely a hint that golden gate was behind the thick layer of fog. It’s been gray and rainy all day, not so much a peek from the sun until just now. It’s 6pm and the rain is continuing at a slow but steady pace. However, my apartment slowly began to fill with this warm light, transporting me to an evening out on the porch back in Indiana after an afternoon storm. Though we lacked the thunder & lightning, the afterglow was just as beautiful as one could hope. I was afraid I’d never see something like this here, but San Francisco continues to surprise me with its Midwestern similarities.
We had our company Halloween party yesterday. I found some photos from the costume contest on a co-worker’s flickr page. We had some great costumes. Mr. T won but Kali got second runner up with her mermaid costume.
I was at Kali’s until midnight the night before. She jokingly told everyone that her living room was transformed in to a sweatshop, but she was a gracious host, keeping me supplied with hot tea and chicken nuggets. To be honest, the fact that we pulled off a mermaid dress was a miracle. I hadn’t sewn anything in years, and this adventure was the first time I’d removed my sewing machine from its case, so I had no idea how to use it. Add on to that slippery fabric and a dress pattern that we were making up as we went along and you might begin to sense how big of a miracle it really was. As I wrapped up the last of the hand stitching to attach the fins to the bottom of the skirt, I was just crossing my fingers that this was right. After a rough start, I had finally found my zen place with the sewing machine and so I just started doing things without thinking and suddenly, I had this finished (relative term :) garment in my hand. She tried it on and it was perfect. Our haphazard measuring and sewing somehow worked. Sadly, I have yet to come across a photo that actually shows the bottom half of her outfit. She was very kind in lending my handiwork credit to those who complimented her outfit. Though I was proud of what we pulled together, I still discouraged people from looking at the stitching too closely :) I was just thankful my grandma would never see it haha. It was really fun, though, being up late making something. I do enjoy saving the day (her seamstress friend was too busy to help her last minute).
While we were out buying some supplies for her costume, we saw some wigs. I had intended to buy one earlier in the week, but with work being so busy, I’d made the decision to skip on Halloween this year. Well, Kali demanded I buy the one I tried on, so I did (and it was 30% off!). She also loaned me a vintage dress she had. So the next morning, I showed up to work sporting this long, red-hair wig and a black power-suit dress type get-up with black boots. I had no idea what things this wig would unleash. DC back at the sauce made a bet with KT that it was my real hair, convinced I had been gone from the sauce long enough to grow it out that long. A few people at work didn’t even recognize me. Several, several more suggested I keep it forever, saying how natural it looked on me. At least 2 guys hit on me in a creepy manner. Oh, and I don’t know if it was the wig or just that I was walking with Kali, but men on the street were just staring at us as we walked to Safeway. It was insane! I just might have to break it out for random bar adventures. I did agree that it suited me, but having long hair drove me crazy. I felt like I spent half my day flipping my hair back. I mainly got annoyed that people had a problem with me not trying to dress as someone particular. *sigh* Though, I did gain some amusement from constantly saying “I’m no one.” all day.
There were other great costumes, though. A little devil dog, Tim Taylor & Al Borlin (admittedly, I had no idea who the guys were but I love that show so much that I got a little crush on them for thinking of it), and Cerra spent hours straightening Andrew’s hair so he could be Mystery from VH1’s pick-up artist. haha She’s a good friend.
Anyway, it was a fun time. I’m sure more photos will be popping up on Facebook. I’m gonna go back to enjoying my lazy rainy day. She & Him concert is Monday!
Oh, speaking of music. Tyler had his radio debut this morning (7am my time so I slept through it), but he’ll be on again tomorrow night 9:45pm EDT on 99.5 WZPL. They have an online stream. Tune in! They’re playing “It’s Okay”. I’m so happy for him :) hah, I guess he walked in to his bank the other day and they were playing his album. One of the tellers had ordered it online, without even knowing him. So funny. Getting closer. I know this boy is gonna make it. He’s hoping to have a show while I’m home so I can get my fix. Yay!
